Writing Ideas

1) Ask your students to fill in the blanks and write a story.

John, an overly ______ actor learns that life is more than _______ when he meets _______ on a trip to ________.

There must be at least three other characters, a sand storm, quick sand, and an exploding cigar.

(We'll feature some of these next month.)



2) How can we have reading lead to writing? Mark Larson uses this format. After his students read a story, they respond to these four questions:

  • REMEMBER: What memories does this story stir up?
  • DISCOVER: Dig around to find out more about the subject.
  • DECIDE: Take a stand and prove a point about the story.
  • CREATE. Write an original story that was inspired by this story.
